Sustainability Review and Growth Strategy: Maison Mishmashi - Dubai
This report was developing following a visit to the corporate storefront and factory in Dubai, engagement with the CEO and designer, assessing the current supply chain and surveying available marketing initiatives. It is clear that Maison Mishmashi already embraces a number of elements that leading sustainable design houses promote including, in-house manufacturing and slow, small-batch production. A business case for sustainability was developed and presented to the designer, including growth opportunities specific to the Middle East. Current gaps including the need to develop responsible sourcing standards were raised, goals were set for supply chain mapping and the designer was provided with recycled fabrics and palmwood recommendations as alternatives involved in furniture construction. While many elements of the review and assessment remain internal to the company, snippets of the sustainability communications provided for the company following the assessment are below.
Generational Design
In all Mishmashi products, our commitment to sustainability is derived from my passion for lasting design. Everything is designed with the intention that it will be handed down between generations, gifted to friends, and versatile enough to transcend interior design trends, moving between rooms of your home, regardless of the season or year.
Manufacturing
Mishmashi's small batch production process ensures that we do not rely on offshore manufacturers. this way, Mishmashi products are continually produced as the highest quality pieces possible.
Sewing, construction of our poufs and bespoke furniture are all undertaken through a slow manufacturing method we developed in-house that puts sustainability and fair labour at the forefront. everyone in Our small but mighty team at Mishmashi shares this focus.
Shipping and Packaging
We use fabric, not cardboard.
Our local shipments are delivered by hand, in our signature style - wrapped in fabric that can be either returned to the store and re-used or creatively repurposed in your own home.
For international orders, all of our mailers are recycled and we repurpose shipping boxes for storage at the Mishmashi storefront and warehouse. Currently, we are planning for all of our packaging of international orders to be 100% recyclable, which should be implemented in by 2023.
Fabric
While historic and prevailing models in the fashion and interiors space believed it was cheaper to create more and throw away the extra, Maison Mishmashi has developed its own system of thoughtful sourcing and recycling fabric to prove that less is more when it comes to sustainable design. Mishmashi products are made of mixed fabrics and layered designs, an approach that enables an even more thoughtful approach to sourcing textiles.
Future
Keeping in mind that ensuring operations remain sustainable requires constant intention, adjustment and improvement, Maison Mishmashi is working on setting more goals to achieve more sustainable operations. For instance, By 2025, Mishmashi will have mapped its entire supply chain, so consumers know the origins of every element included in each product.
